The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) has officially announced opened the applications for the K-Startup Grand Challenge 2025, South Korea’s premier international accelerator program offering equity-free startup grants for Asian market expansion, featuring a funding of $633,000 and Korean corporate partnerships with giants like Samsung, Hyundai, and LG for entrepreneurs seeking strategic growth opportunities.
In its tenth edition, this government-backed initiative is open for startups worldwide, providing entrepreneurs from the US and other countries with a structured pathway to establish operations in South Korea and expand across Asia. The program has been redesigned for 2025 with a more flexible approach that accommodates founders’ needs for maintaining their existing operations while exploring Korean market opportunities.
“KSGC 2025 reflects Korea’s commitment to being more than a launchpad—it’s a true partner in global growth,” said Jonghwi Lee, Global Division Director at GCCEI. “This program is designed to provide what global founders need most: strategic flexibility, substantial non-dilutive funding, and direct access to Korea’s key industries.”
International Gateway to Korean Corporate Partnerships
For international startups, including those from the United States, K-Startup Grand Challenge 2025 offers direct access to over 20 of Korea’s leading conglomerates, including Samsung, Hyundai, LG, and KT, enabling high-impact proof-of-concept (PoC) projects and strategic partnerships.
These corporate connections come through the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy and Innovation (GCCEI), which operates the program and is part of Korea’s 19-center national CCEI network. Each center is aligned with a major corporate partner, creating structured pathways for international startups to engage with Korea’s industrial leaders.
Selected participants will receive comprehensive support including visa sponsorship, assistance with business incorporation, free office space, curated business matchmaking, and follow-on scale-up grants of up to ₩50 million (US$33K) for top-performing teams.
K-Startup Grand Challenge 2025 is a Phased Approach for Global Entrepreneurs
The K-Startup Grand Challenge hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS), organized by the Korea Institute of Startup and Entrepreneurship Development (KISED), and operated by the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (GCCEI) offers a combined pool of ₩950 million ($633,000) in government support, structured in three phases to accommodate international founders:
- Phase 1 – Market Exploration (July–August, 3 Weeks, 2025 | Online | 80 teams): Focuses on mentoring, Korean market discovery, and localization strategies, allowing startups to participate remotely.
- Phase 2 – Market Entry (September–December, 3 Months, 2025 | Remote-enabled on-site | 40 teams): Includes hands-on acceleration in Korea, business development, incorporation, and investor engagement with flexible on-site requirements.
- Phase 3 – Market Growth (January–April, 3 Months, 2026 | Remote-enabled on-site | 20 teams): Provides tailored support for long-term growth and presence in Korea, including follow-on commercialization grants for the top 8 teams.
Global Visibility and Success Stories
K-Startup Grand Challenge offers unparalleled exposure to Korea’s top institutions and global stakeholders. KSGC participants will showcase their innovations at the official Demo Day during COMEUP 2025, South Korea’s premier startup conference.
Select teams will also have the opportunity to pitch at the 2025 APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting, gaining exposure to policymakers from across the Asia-Pacific region.
The program has already demonstrated success with international companies. Polymerize, a Singapore-based AI deep-tech startup and winner of the 2024 KSGC, established a local R&D team in partnership with KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), secured Series A bridge funding from SparkLabs Korea, and is running PoC projects with more than 10 major Korean materials companies.
KSGC is open to startups founded and currently led by non-Korean nationals from any country, including the United States. International students residing in Korea are also welcome to apply. Eligible startups should have been operating for less than seven years, or up to ten years for deep-tech sectors.
The program prioritizes companies in AI, biotech, fintech, smart manufacturing, energy, mobility, and other innovation-driven industries—sectors where American startups often demonstrate significant expertise.
