E2B, the open-source cloud infrastructure startup reshaping how AI agents interact with the digital world, has raised $21 million in a Series A round to advance sandbox environments that allow autonomous agents to operate like human workers, only faster, safer, and at massive scale.
The world is witnessing a generational shift as AI agents rapidly evolve from experimental tools to mission-critical systems. However, they face one major hurdle in today’s cloud infrastructure that was built for humans, not machines.
E2B flips that model. Instead of retrofitting legacy cloud systems for agile workflows, E2B builds a bespoke platform where each AI agent runs in its own secure, ephemeral, and highly performant sandbox environment. These environments offer agents a virtual computer, access to a secure browser, a filesystem, and tools to run code or access the web, just like human workers, but without downtime.
“The expectations we have from AI agents in the enterprise are great. However, we expect them to scale and perform on legacy infrastructure that was not designed for agent-based use. E2B solves this by equipping AI agents with safe, scalable, highly performant cloud infrastructure as well as tools that help agents scale in production,” said Vasek Mlejnsky, Co-founder and CEO of E2B.
“The future of enterprise productivity is agent-driven. Our goal is to provide the standard runtime infrastructure for this new era of work,” added Vasek Mlejnsky.
How It Works: Secure, Scalable Sandboxed Computing
At its core, E2B’s innovation lies in its ability to create disposable micro virtual machines (microVMs) using Firecracker, a technology pioneered by Amazon. Each sandbox spins up in under 200 milliseconds and provides a fully isolated environment, capable of executing untrusted code and performing complex tasks like coding, web browsing, data retrieval, or analysis.
These environments support multiple languages, including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Bash, enabling agents to operate across workflows. Developers can also launch or destroy thousands of these sandboxes dynamically, thanks to an orchestration framework that scales to millions of concurrent sessions.
This flexibility opens the door to AI agents that don’t just answer questions, but complete multi-step workflows autonomously: from analyzing PDFs to building full-stack web apps to writing complex SQL queries from scratch.
Enterprise Adoption and Visionary Backing
The $21 million Series A round was led by Insight Partners, with Decibel, Sunflower Capital, Kaya VC, and notable angels like former Docker CEO Scott Johnston joining in. The capital injection will fund engineering expansion, new developer tools, enterprise-scale orchestration features, and global go-to-market efforts.
E2B’s adoption is already impressive. Enterprises, including several Fortune 500 companies, alongside cutting-edge AI firms such as Perplexity AI, Hugging Face, and Groq, are already using its infrastructure to deploy and manage autonomous AI agents. These organizations rely on E2B to bring their most ambitious AI systems to life, with a focus on performance, safety, and scale.
E2B’s decision to go open-source is strategic, not idealistic. The platform’s core components, sandbox environments, orchestration layers, observability modules, and secrets vaults, are all modular and extensible. This open architecture allows enterprises to integrate E2B into existing DevOps pipelines while customizing agent behaviors and security controls.
Furthermore, the open-source model enables developers worldwide to contribute, refine, and expand the protocol, thereby reinforcing its goal to become a universal runtime standard for AI agents. E2B offers both a managed SaaS and a self-hosted version for data-sensitive industries, including finance, defense, and healthcare.
The Future of Agentic Cloud Infrastructure
E2B is betting big on a future where AI agents become digital coworkers. These agents won’t just enhance productivity, they’ll own entire workflows: financial forecasting, legal analysis, web development, or customer onboarding. But for this future to materialize, infrastructure must evolve.
As AI agents become increasingly capable, the infrastructure supporting them must also be equally advanced. E2B’s sandbox environments offer the intelligence, security, and scalability to empower tomorrow’s AI-first enterprises. With its open-source foundation and Series A momentum, E2B now stands at the forefront of the agentic cloud revolution.
“Insight Partners is excited to back E2B’s team. Achieving such rapid growth and enterprise adoption can be challenging. We believe that E2B’s open-source sandbox standard will become a cornerstone of secure and scalable AI adoption across the Fortune 100 and beyond,” said Praveen Akkiraju, Managing Director at Insight Partners.
