Challenge! K-Startup 2025, South Korea’s largest startup competition, returns with expanded eligibility criteria, increased startup funding, and strong government support. With ministries involved in every stage, this initiative fosters innovation and gives entrepreneurs critical resources to scale their businesses globally.

Additionally, the competition offers startup funding, government support, and exclusive growth opportunities. Winners will share a KRW $ 1.4 billion prize pool, with top teams securing up to KRW $ 300 million.

Meanwhile, grand finalists receive exemptions from document evaluations in future startup funding programs, increasing their chances of securing additional resources. Grand Prize winners gain priority access to the 2026 Prospective Startup Package, which provides mentorship and business development assistance.

With strong government support, Challenge! K-Startup 2025 ensures participants receive the backing needed to transform ideas into thriving businesses.

Eligibility Criteria for Participation

To compete in the Challenge! K-Startup 2025, entrepreneurs must meet specific eligibility criteria. The competition welcomes aspiring and established entrepreneurs with innovative business ideas. Participants must apply through ministry-specific leagues, each with criteria to ensure broad industry representation.

Eligible candidates include students, professionals, defense personnel, and startups across various sectors, from technology to culture and national defense.

Ministries Driving Challenge! K-Startup 2025

Since its launch in 2016 by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Ministry of National Defense, ‘Challenge! K-Startup’ has evolved into South Korea’s largest startup competition. Over the years, more ministries have joined, expanding the competition’s reach and impact.

The ministries involved in organizing the Challenge! K-Startup 2025 plays a key role in supporting entrepreneurs. The competition is spearheaded by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) and includes:

  • The Ministry of Education
  • The Ministry of Science and ICT
  • The Ministry of National Defense
  • The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism
  • The Ministry of Environment
  • The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family
  • The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport
  • The Defense Acquisition Program Administration
  • The Korean Intellectual Property Office

These ministries provide essential government support, funding, and policy guidance to ensure the competition fosters impactful innovation and long-term entrepreneurial success.

Minister OH Youngju emphasized the importance of the competition, stating, “Challenge! K-Startup is the largest scale startup competition at the pan-government level, and we anticipate the challenges from creative entrepreneurs or potential entrepreneurs. MSS will actively support these startups to revitalize our economy and enable them to grow into global companies.”

This strong ministerial backing ensures that participating startups receive not only financial support but also strategic guidance to navigate regulatory landscapes and market entry challenges.

Application Process and Key Dates

The competition was official announced open on February 4, 2025. Ministry-specific preliminary leagues will run until August, leading to the main competition with 225 selected teams. In December, the top 30 teams will compete for prestigious awards, including the President’s Award and Prime Minister’s Award.

With an average of 5,700 teams participating annually—including a record 6,238 teams in 2024—the program has become a premier platform for emerging entrepreneurs to showcase groundbreaking business ideas and push the boundaries of innovation.

With clear eligibility criteria, startup funding opportunities, and government support, Challenge! K-Startup 2025 serves as a critical platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their innovation. The ministries involved will provide official notices detailing specific requirements for each league.

Entrepreneurs should visit the official K-Startup website (www.k-startup.go.kr) for complete application guidelines and deadlines.
