Princeton NuEnergy, a startup advancing lithium-ion battery recycling and clean-tech innovation, secured $16 million in Series A funding, emphasizing its dedication to sustainable energy solutions, driven by its innovative LPAS™ technology and contributing to developing a robust circular supply chain.
The funding, led by Fortune Global 500 member Wistron Corporation, with participation from Honda Motor Co., Ltd., GS Futures, and Traxys North America, underscores the company’s commitment to revolutionizing the critical materials supply chain through its innovative direct recycling technology for lithium-ion batteries.
Princeton NuEnergy (PNE), a clean-tech company rooted in Princeton University, will utilize the money to build a new recycling facility and purchase equipment to expand processing capacity and support company operations.
“This Series A funding round represents a major step towards realizing our vision of a cleaner, greener future through cutting-edge lithium-ion battery recycling technology. We are grateful for the support from our investors and partners,” said PNE Founder and CEO Dr. Chao Yan.
Revolutionizing Recycling with Innovative Technology
PNE’s groundbreaking technology, the low-temperature plasma-assisted separation process (LPAS™), stands at the forefront of lithium-ion battery recycling. Unlike conventional methods, LPAS™ significantly reduces recycling costs, environmental waste, and carbon emissions.
This patented approach enables higher critical material recovery rates and superior material performance, marking a pivotal shift in sustainable energy solutions. PNE’s unique low-temperature plasma-assisted separation process (LPAS™) yields battery-grade cathode and anode materials that can be reintroduced directly into cell manufacture.
When compared to traditional methods, PNE’s direct recycling process achieves recycling efficiency rates of over 95 percent and outstanding ESG performance at half the cost and with a far lower environmental footprint. PNE started its first end-to-end production-scale lithium-ion battery direct recycling line in the United States 2022.
Peter Tung, President of Service and Recycling Business Group of Wistron Corporation, a key investor, expressed pride in partnering with PNE, emphasizing the importance of establishing a circular supply chain for lithium-ion batteries to combat climate change.
Expanding Production and Research Initiatives
The funding infusion supplements previous seed rounds totaling $7 million and research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy totaling $16.375 million. PNE plans to utilize the funds to construct new recycling facilities and procure advanced equipment, thereby enhancing processing capabilities and supporting domestic manufacturing.
Manabu Ozawa, Managing Executive Officer of Honda Motor Co., said, “Princeton NuEnergy has an innovative concept and technologies for lithium-ion battery recycling, and Honda has high expectations for their future potential. The plasma-based direct recycling technology will enable the sustainability of the EV battery supply chain.”
“Honda strives to achieve 100 percent use of sustainable materials by 2050. We envision that this technology has a great potential. Honda will continue to search for, collaborate with and invest in various venture companies with a promising future through our global open innovation program – Honda Xcelerator Ventures,” added Ozawa.
Honda Xcelerator Ventures is an open innovation platform encouraging companies and Honda to collaborate.
This funding round marks a significant milestone in PNE’s journey towards shaping a sustainable future. As the global demand for clean energy solutions intensifies, Princeton NuEnergy stands at the forefront, driving innovation and fostering partnerships to create a world powered by eco-friendly technology.
